Clary Sage Essential Oil (Botanical name: Salvia sclarea)
Clary Sage is distilled from the whole plant and produced in Europe.
Properties of Clary Sage
- It has a slight sweet smelling, nutty odor, exotic and heavy.
- Antidepressant, antiseptic, anti-spasmodic, emmenagogue, uterine tonic and aphrodisiac
Uses of Clary Sage
- In aromatherapy, Clary Sage is preferred over Common Sage. Common Sage is potent and can be toxic even in small doses. Clary Sage is non toxic but should still be used in 1% dilution. High quantities of Clary Sage can cause euphoria and cause light-headedness. While on treatment, do not use Clary Sage before driving a car or consuming alcohol.
- Clary Sage oil can be used for either sexes but considered a feminine oil as it helps regulate hormonal imbalance. Clary sage contains natural plant hormones that resemble estrogen. This oil is helpful for PMS i.e. premenstrual tension and benefits those with menopausal symptoms.
- It can help lower high blood pressure.
- It’s the best known oil for pre-conceptual care and postnatal blues due to its anti depressant qualities.
- Not recommended during pregnancy or for baby care
- It can be used as a compress during labor to help relieve pain.
- Its aroma is sensual and relaxing; its anti depressant and euphoric actions help to dispel any tension that a couple may experience.
Clary Sage for Depression
Use the oil in a vaporizer, burner or add it to your bath.
Clary Sage for Irregular painful period
Mix Clary Sage oil with a carrier oil and massage this oil on your lower abdominal area and lower back for a couple of day before, during and after your menses.
Clary Sage for Skin Inflammation
Great for application on rashes caused by shaving and on inflamed skin.
Clary Sage for Sore Throat
Mix Clary Sage oil into a carrier oil and rub this oil blend on your chest and throat 3-4 times daily or inhale it.

Clary Sage Oil Caution:
Large quantities of this oil can cause drowsiness, hence use in moderation. Avoid this oil during pregnancy especially if one is suffering from uterine or ovarian growths, cancer or on estrogen supplements.
