Eucalyptus Essential Oil (Botanical name: Eucalyptus globulus)
Eucalyptus essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of leaves of the eucalyptus plant or tree. It has a woody, spicy and medicinal aroma.

Properties of Eucalyptus Oil and its Effects

  • Eucalyptus oil has antiseptic, anti-spasmodic, analgesic, antiviral, parasiticidal, expectorant, decongestant, diuretic, febrifuge, hypoglycemic, deodorant, mental stimulant, prophylactic properties.
  • It has an earthy, fresh, woody and medicinal aroma with a top perfumery note.
  • Eucalyptus Oil has a thin consistency and is clear in color. There are also two other varieties of eucalyptus oil called Lemon Eucalyptus essential oil which is pale yellow colored with a fresh lemony sweet slightly woody smell to it. The second variety is Eucalyptus Radiata essential oil. This is clear in color with a thin consistency with a sweet, fruity, slightly camphor smell to it.
  • Eucalyptus has a stimulating and uplifting psychological effect. It is a natural remedy if you are feeling low or lethargic.

Uses of Eucalyptus Oil

  • It is a great remedy for cold and sinusitis because of its anti-viral and decongestant property. Inhale vapors either by steam inhalation or oil burner or vaporizer. This keeps the viruses at bay or contracting from other people in the house.
  • During flu, mix eucalyptus oil with a carrier oil and massage well into the chest, shoulders and rib cage. This should give relief from congestion and flu.
  • Eucalyptus oil is beneficial to treat asthma, rheumatism, urinary tract infections, muscle pains and aches. It is very helpful after strenuous activity or sport or high intensity exercise. It should be used in the bath or mixed with a carrier oil and massaged into affected areas of the body.
  • It is an effective insect repellent.

Ways to Use Eucalyptus Oil

Bath
Steam Inhalation
Burner or Vaporizer
Body Massage Oil – Mix eucalyptus oil with a carrier oil and massage affected areas (do skin test for sensitivity testing before use)

Eucalytus Oil Caution:
Eucalyptus oil should be avoided during early pregnancy. This oil should not be used during pre-conceptual care, post natal care, during labor and on babies. Avoid this oil on individuals suffering from epilepsy and high blood pressure.
