Syndrome X also called as metabolic syndrome is a cluster of diseases occurring together in a person. It is associated with increase in obesity and lack of physical exercise. Metabolic syndrome comprises of obesity, insulin resistance, dyslipidemias, hypertension and ultimately high risk for Type 2 diabetes and premature death from heart disease.

Watch Out For These Signs to Know if you are a high risk for Syndrome X

  • Abdominal Obesity: If you have a huge tummy and you’re not pregnant, you need to measure your waist circumference. Men with a waist circumference of 40 inches (102 cms) or more and women with a waist circumference of 35 inches (89 cms) or more need to start intervention.
  • High Triglyceride Levels: Get your lipid profile checked for triglycerides. If the values are 150 mg/dl or more, get cautioned.
  • Low HDL Cholesterol: If your lipid profile shows HDL or high density lipoproteins at 40 mg/dl or below in men, and 50 mg/dl or below in women, watch out.
  • High Blood Pressure: A blood pressure reading of 140 mg/dl to 90 mg/dl or more is a risk factor.
  • High FBP: Elevated Fasting Blood Sugar Levels of 110mg/dl or more is an independent risk factor.

    Hi Bev,
Syndrome X is a set of several health conditions appearing in a person specifically obesity, insulin resistance, high cholesterol, hypertension and ultimately high risk for Type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

Syndrome X also called as metabolic syndrome does not happen overnight. It is a build up of years of neglect over your eating habits, eating the wrong foods, irregular meal timings, lack of regular exercise and a lack of a disciplined life. It is likely that your food intake and eating habits were unhealthy leading to slow build up of the illnesses. Dancing is great but irregular dancing is worse than one who doesn’t dance at all. It is possible that you have developed Syndrome X due to these reasons.
