Bone Spur Home Remedies

Bone Spur is an additional bone which grows over the normal bone. It is also referred to as an Osteophyte. It is soft and results in pain, when in contact or excessive pressure with tendons, nerves and ligaments. A bone spur or osteophyte is commonly seen in areas, such as hands, feet, spine, knees, shoulders and hips. Repeated problems with bone spur require immediate medical attention.

Bone Spur Symptoms

Bone spur affects mobility in many individuals. Typical symptoms of bone spur include pain while movement, radiating pain in the shoulder region, back pain, pain in the neck and shoulders, headache, progressive weakness, bladder dysfunction, tingling sensation, feeling of numbness and pain in the extremities.

Bone Spur Causes

In some individuals, bone spur breaks off from the main bone and swims in the system. These are referred to as ‘loose bodies’. It floats and occupies the area between the bones, thereby affecting mobility. Certain contributing factors for bone spur include injury, neuropathic breakdown of the feet, ageing, pressure, arthritis, plantar fasciitis, physical instability, spinal stenosis and spondylosis.

Bone Spur Treatment

Treatment techniques involve the usage of medications and surgical options. Non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) provide relief from pain and swelling. Surgery proves beneficial in those with limitations, such as joint immobility. Bone spur surgeries are a part of other operations, such as arthritis. Bone spur surgery is also performed arthroscopically, with the help of an inserted camera. Corticosteroid injections provide relief from pain.

Tips for Bone Spur

Avoid excessive pressure on the area of spur, as it helps to prevent further complications. Avoid high heeled sandals and tight shoes, as it curbs movement and promotes bone damage. It is important to maintain weight, especially in people with osteoarthritis. Use better fitting shoes and sandals. Simple stretching exercises are equally helpful. Keep yourself physically active and fit!
