Bursitis is the inflammation of the bursae, accompanied by pain. Bursae are present in the area between the muscles and tendons. They are sac like structure, which are filled with fluid. Certain physical activities (playing baseball and swinging of the racket in tennis) also, causes bursitis of the elbow. Long hours of walking and improper fitting shoes cause bursitis of the ankle. Individuals with staphyloccoccal infection, arthritis and gout are at greater risk of bursitis.

Treatment for Bursitis

Treatment techniques for aseptic or non infectious bursitis involve medications, ice compresses, anti inflammatory drugs and rest. Cortisone injection is also recommended in some cases. Physical therapy programs are equally effective for bursitis. Intravenous antibiotic therapy is administered for septic bursitis. Bursectomy and surgical drainage proves helpful.
