Home Remedies for Chafing
Chafing is the irritation of the skin, which results from rubbing or abrasion of the skin.
Chafing is commonly seen in all areas, which come into contact with any object, thereby resulting in friction or rubbing. It is generally seen around the nipples, underarm and groin. Chafing is commonly seen in athletes and over weight individuals. Chafing is also seen in individuals, who are thin, due to their high perspiration levels.
Chafing Causes
Chafing is not related to weight loss of an individual. Various contributing factors for chafing are poor hygienic practices, abrasion against an object, excessive body weight, improperly fitting clothes, tight under garments and rubbing of body parts, such as the underarms, inner thighs and groin.
Chafing Symptoms
Friction, as a result of abrasion between cloth and body results in irritation. Burning sensation, redness of the affected area and a stinging pain are the typical symptoms of chafing.
Treatment for Chafing
Treatment of a chafe is analogous to that of an open injury. Wash with warm water and soap. Place sterile gauze. Topical application of an antibacterial ointment proves helpful. Apply an ointment rich in vitamin A and D. Petroleum free jelly or Vaseline is equally beneficial.
Home Remedies for Chafing
- Chafing Treatment with Water: Adequate water intake or hydration helps to increase the perspiration levels.
- Chafing Treatment with Calendula Oil: Topical application of calendula oil has an excellent effect on chaffed skin. This is attributed to its anti bacterial and anti inflammatory properties.
- Chafing Treatment with Diet: A whole and balanced diet rich in vegetables, fruits, grains, milk proves beneficial. Increase the intake of foods rich ion vitamins A and C, in addition to diet. These vitamins and mineral have a positive effect on the complexion.
- Chafing Treatment with Lubricants: Petroleum free lubricants, which do not stain are helpful. Topical application of lubricants, especially, prior to movement, such as exercising, jogging and walking, provides relief form chafe. Try making this lubricant at the home level! Mix a cup each of Vaseline, and ointments of vitamins A and D. To the same mixture, add aloe vera and one fourth cup of vitamin E cream. The latter improves the texture and fragrance of the mixture. This lubricant is an excellent remedy for skin blisters and other skin problems.
Tips for Chafing
Chafing is easily prevented by adequate water intake, use of lubricants, keeping oneself dry and use of properly ventilated light clothes. Dab some talcum powder over the chaffed area. Avoid cotton clothes, especially before running (athletes). Cotton absorbs the sweat and increases chafing. Synthetic clothes are a better option to prevent and deal with chafing.
