Home Remedies for Cough

Cough is a reflex reaction which results in sudden expulsion air from lungs. Infection of the respiratory tract increases the secretion of the mucus (phlegm). This results in the obstruction of the passage, which indirectly contributes to cough. Cough is of two kinds, namely non productive cough or dry cough (lack of mucus) and productive cough (mucus secretion from the lungs).

Symptoms of Cough

Typical symptoms of cough include shortness of breath, hoarse voice, green or brown colored phlegm, chest pain, pain in the throat, elevation in body temperature, inflammation of the calf muscles, sweating, feeling of lethargy, recurrent night cough and whooping cough.

Causes of Cough

Cough is a symptom of some underlying health problem, not a disease in itself. The underlying cause for cough requires treatment. A number of factors contribute to cough. Some of them include respiratory tract infection, pleurisy, swelling of the larynx, pneumonia, whooping cough, bronchitis, smoking, lung cancer, hay fever, postnasal drip, tuberculosis, sudden weather changes, asthma, influenza and common cold.

Treatment for Cough

The cause determines the technique of treatment. Over the counter medications prove beneficial and provide symptomatic relief. Steam inhalation, drinking warm fluids often and use of cough lozenges are useful. Bronchodilators (through inhalation) decrease the swelling in the respiratory passage. Individuals with blood pressure problems should continue with their respective medications.
