Home Remedies for Gas

Flatulence or gas is a mixture of gases, which emit from the anus. It results in a bad or foul odor and is generally characterized by a sound. Flatulence is also referred to as farting. It is primarily because of bloating, which causes social embarrassment.

Flatulence Causes


Excessive eating is the main contributing factor for flatulence. Lactase deficiency, presence of bacteria in the intestine, drug intake, starchy foods, swallowing of air, constipation, dark beer and red wine, disorders of the digestive tract, consumption of fiber foods, irritable bowel syndrome, lactase deficiency, breakdown of undigested foods, high fat diet, contaminated water, fat malabsorption, high fat diet, preparation of food in unhygienic conditions, consumption of products that contain malt extracts and metabolic breakdown of sulfur containing proteins and amino acids in the intestines are the other contributing factors.

Flatulence Symptoms

Foul odor, a feeling of bloating, excessive expulsion of wind, abdominal discomfort, pain and belching are the varying symptoms of foul odor.

Treatment of Flatulence

The objective of flatulence treatment is to decrease the expulsion of gas and the offensive odor. Antibiotics prove helpful, in case of parasitic infection and bacterial over growth. Regulate the bowel movement, especially in case of constipation. This is treated with laxatives and high fiber diet. Anxiety results in swallowing of air. Counseling is effective in treating the same.

Home Remedies for Flatulence


Simple remedies from the kitchen cupboard prove beneficial in the treatment of flatulence. It is not a serious problem, which is life threatening.

  • Flatulence Treatment with Ginger: Put some fresh and grated ginger in a a cup of lemon juice. Chew them to provide relief from gas.
  • Flatulence Treatment with Peppermint Tea: It is highly effective in the treatment of flatulence. It enhances the breath and cures gas. Prepare peppermint tea and drink on a daily basis. Other herbal teas, such as caraway tea, anise tea and spearmint tea are useful. Peppermint candies also prove effective.
  • Flatulence Treatment with Honey: Add a drop of dill oil to a teaspoon of honey. Drink this mixture, after meal, so as to treat flatulence.
  • Flatulence Treatment with Diet: Carbonated beverages are a complete ‘no-no’. Other foods such as cheese, baked foods like bread, beans, broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower are not recommended.
  • Flatulence Treatment with Spices: Take a teaspoon each of green cardamom seeds, pepper and dry ginger in a blender. Make a paste with half a teaspoon of water and consume an hour after meal.

Tips for Flatulence
Do not drink water, during meals, as it weakens the digestive system. Keep a track of foods that increase the release of gas. Lactose intolerance results in flatulence. Lactase is available in tablet form.
