Hiccups Remedies
Hiccup is the repetition of a noise or spasms from the diaphragm. Hiccups usually range from a few seconds to a few minutes. Hiccups fall into three categories, namely, acute or transient, persistent and intractable. Acute hiccups last for a few minutes – they are seen for less than a month and more than two days. Intractable hiccups are a result of certain health conditions, which range to more than two months. They are involuntary actions, not controlled in a manual manner.
Hiccups Causes
The chest and stomach are separated by the diaphragm. Any kind of irritation to the diaphragm results in erratic breathing. A number of factors cause hiccups, some of them are – excessive alcohol intake, surgery, eating spicy food, metabolic disorders, eating a large meal, central nervous system disorders, intake of carbonated beverages, nerve damage or irritation, swallowing excessive air, emotional stress or sudden excitement, sudden temperature changes and use of tobacco. Lung infection, stomach disorder and renal problems also cause hiccups.
Hiccups Symptoms
A persistent sound is one of the characteristic symptoms of hiccups. A feeling of tightness is seen to occur in the chest region. The number of hiccups varies from four in a minute to sixty, though the number fails to be the cause of concern. Immediate medical attention is necessary, in case of persistent hiccups for more than two days.
Treatment for Hiccups
Simple techniques, such as drinking water, pulling hard on the tongue, holding the breath, use of smelling salts, a thought of fear and use of sugar proves helpful. Typical medical treatment is not necessary in many cases. Certain medications and drugs for convulsions are highly effective.
