Home Remedies for Swine Flu

What is Swine Flu?

Swine flu is a viral infection caused by the type A influenza virus (H1N1 virus). Cause for swine flu started as a respiratory disease in pigs in which transmission to humans did not sustain beyond three persons earlier. But now, based on Whole Health Organization Reports, the swine influenza H1N1 virus appears contagious as there seems to be a rising epidemic with the increase in swine flu casualties in humans.

World Health Organisation (WHO) has escalated the world Pandemic Phase from Phase 3 to Phase 4 (in a 6-Scale Phase), indicating that a worldwide pandemic due to swine flu H1N1 is possible. An infected person may infect others 1 day before symptoms develop and up to 7 or more days after they become sick. It is better to be aware of precautions and cures rather than striking panic. Children and the elderly are likely to be more prone to contracting this virus rather than middle aged adults.

Swine Flu Diagnosis & Tests

A respiratory specimen is collected within the first four to five days of contracting swine flu in adults. Children may take 10 days or longer. This is when an infected person is likely to shed the virus and help diagnose swine influenza A infection. The specimen is then sent to a hospital for lab testing to detect swine flu influenza A virus.

Signs and symptoms of Swine Flu

Swine flu health symptoms are no different from those seen in seasonal flu which are; fever, chills, cough, cold, sneezing, sore throat, body ache, headache, lethargy, loss of appetite, nausea and fatigue.
In some people, cases of diarrhea and vomiting are associated with swine flu. In the past, people have reported more serious illnesses like pneumonia and respiratory failure resulting in deaths due to swine flu infection. Worse chronic medical conditions may result.

Medical Treatment for Swine Flu
The US Centers for Disease Control recommend antiviral drugs to treat and prevent infection of swine influenza viruses: Tamiflu (oseltamivir) and Relenza (Zanamivir). These drugs are most effective when started within 2 days of symptoms showing up. Antiviral drugs are prescription medicines which come as pills, inhaler or in a liquid form. These prevent the flu viruses from multiplying in your body, help in faster and better recovery and may prevent serious health complications.
Vaccine for Swine Flu
Currently there is no vaccine readily available to protect against swine flu as the virus is new. Research is under progress and it should take at least 6-12 months before a vaccine is developed against swine flu virus H1N1. Flu immunization done in the past or the seasonal flu vaccine would not give any protection from swine flu.
