What is Yoga


To a lot of people the word Yoga still conjures up visions of contorted skin-fitting leotard-clad gym yuppies? Yoga has become so popular as a form of exercise and system of health regimen around the world, that today, in health clubs and community centers everywhere, people are flocking to learn yoga. In the bargain the real roots of Yoga, this ancient science and art of living, seem to have been forgotten.
The word Yoga is usually translated to mean “union”. It includes union between many elements such as the different organs and systems of the body, to begin with, later between the body, mind and emotions and, finally, between the body, mind, heart and spirit.

Yoga history

Yoga dates back thousands of years to an old culture called the Indus Valley Civilization. There, archeologists stepped upon old collections of traditions by way of art and ancient literature. These were the first written texts, called the Vedas. Later they came upon a rich culture that was said to contain immense wealth of information by way of scriptural injunction that the locals had been practicing for thousands of years. It showed in their health, their glowing complexions, the way they walked, talked, ate, slept and even breathed; above all in their longevity. The more they learnt, the more they wished to know, like you would too.

Why Practice Yoga

It is a big step to even decide to start practicing Yoga, because it involves certain observances and restraints, taking up new practices, exercises and poses, making lifestyle changes so on and so forth. But you are convinced that it’s worth the little trouble. You’re convinced it will definitely bring poise, harmony and equilibrium in your body, mind, and heart. Fortunately there are plenty of resources on Yoga for folks just like you – those just getting started. The best place to start seeking info is, no doubt, the Net. There are literally hundreds upon hundreds of sites devoted solely to the different schools and types of yoga, and a lot of them even offer specific tips and guidelines on how beginners ought to proceed.

Yoga Beginners: Where to start


The Internet is an excellent place to start browsing for information, particularly about Yoga classes and studios or to start ordering Yoga equipment should the need arise.
